Scanned from various home furnishing catalogs (i.e. Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Williams and Sonoma), and blurred to the point of only the simplest definition, these images are first printed on rag photo paper. To these I paint dots, spare lines or brush strokes of gouache to suggest spaces or objects in flux, that might be both forming or dissolving. It is a kind of perceptual casting for recognition or meaning. I am curious about the dialogue between what is remembered and what is seen. The boundaries or slippage of an image’s definition interest me the most. I manipulate my images to position them on the verge of multiple possibilities that reveal embedded assumptions, associations and deep poetic resonances in the mundane.

These pieces begin with images scanned from various home furnishing catalogs (Pottery Bran, Crate and Barrel, Williams and Sonoma, etc.) and interior design magazines. Once printed they were modified with layers of silkscreened line drawings and hand painted elements in gouache. I am fascinated by the carefully constructed, highly marketable realities the catalogs present. They are intimate facades embedded with preconceived values and narratives. They allow us to construct or maintain our identities and self-perceptions. They give form to larger cultural forces such as fashion, class structure, economic and social status and global marketing.
